Is MAC Cruelty Free?

MA is one of the most well-known beauty brands. The luxury lipstick tubes are more than just another lip color; they’re a status symbol. MAC is known for producing one iconic product after another, but is MAC cruelty-free?

The MAC Website Statement

The website states that the brand does not own animal testing facilities and does not ask other people to test on animals on its behalf. While this suggests the brand is cruelty-free, it’s not that simple.

Although MAC doesn’t ask anyone to test on its behalf, it doesn’t prevent it either. Many claim they still sell products in China, where animal testing is still required by law for some products. The website also doesn’t mention suppliers, so we can’t determine if the ingredients are tested on animals.

Cruelty-Free Certification

MAC is not certified as cruelty-free. The PETA website states that MAC and Estée Lauder are companies to avoid if you prefer cruelty-free brands.

Vegan Status

MAC is also not a vegan brand. Many products contain animal-derived ingredients, including beeswax, snail mucin, and honey. There are a handful of vegan options, such as the MAC synthetic makeup brushes. However, vegan options are limited and not always clearly labeled. You’ll need to carefully read ingredient lists or contact customer service to find MAC vegan options.

Cruelty-Free Alternatives

There are so many cruelty-free beauty brands, you don’t have to choose between companies that are cruelty-free or high-quality anymore. You can easily find cruelty-free brands for every product and budget.

Sigma Beauty brings you the same iconic, modern packaging that MAC has become known for. They offer inclusive shades ranges and high-quality formulas. They do have luxury price tags, but many say the products are well worth the extra cost. A little goes a long way, and you won’t wind up with products that don’t do what they advertise.

Bare Minerals

Bare Minerals was one of the first companies to introduce mineral makeup. They began long before social media, offering subscription services through radio ads and at kiosks in the mall. Product demonstrators quickly showed you how mineral veil powder could blur the appearance of pores for a soft-focus finish before we knew what a soft-focus finish was.

Years later, Bare Minerals has become an iconic brand due to the high quality products and impressive ethics. Many products exclude common allergens, including gluten. The brand excludes ingredients not allowed in the EU. They’re transparent regarding ingredients, including whether a product is vegan.

According to PETA, the brand is also cruelty-free.

Is MAC Cruelty-Free?

No, they are not. Although the company states they do not ask anyone to test on animals and do not own animal-testing facilities, the company also lacks transparency regarding sourcing, ingredients, and more that we need to know to see if they are actually cruelty-free. The brand is not certified cruelty free. However, you do have plenty of cruelty-free options so you can still find what you want.
